Tell the story about the need for resources in your Mississippi County. Particularly about the lack of surveys for African-American Cemeteries.

I was able to completely transcribe one small cemetery of about 30 and am half way on another of about 200. We were able to complete 2 rather large ones. We are in the type up stage. I welcome any records anyone would like to share with me for Simpson County. It would serve well to fill in some blanks or verification on ones I may already have. If anyone needs Simpson County records feel free to contact me and if I don't have them I would be happy to try and locate them for you on my next visit to the courthouses or cemetery.
The cemeteries I have already are
Gregory Cemetery, Magee MS
Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Mendenhall
Mary Grove Church, Magee MS
and portions of Rock Pisgah Church Mendenhall, MS
Wish me luck
I admire your work, Belinda. I'll help to spread the word. Wish I was down that way to help out!
Good background, Belinda. Posted the need at the Cemeteries Forum on AfriGeneas. Also alerted members here to the need. Here is the connecting link
Like a good grandmother, I always to try to help my grands with projects for school. One had to do a project on Alex Haley and it roused me to start out on tracing my family tree again. I really don't care for the ancestry.com commercials , they really shouldn't be aired in most of Mississippi. I never thought it would be as easy, but I was so disheartened at the lack of African American record. I would browse the genealogical references online and at he local library but of course nothing. The librarian looked at me and was almost ashamed to admit that the marriage records were the "whites". I looked through our counties cemeteries, well the churches were listed but only a wealth of non-black cemetery records.
This is just unsatisfactory. I have friends out of state and whenever possible I acquire records from the courthouse for them. There have to be others out there searching for long lost loved ones in Simpson County.
A few friends and I have started the job of transcribing African American cemeteries in Simpson County. We really would enjoy the company and the help. I know this is a labor of love but hopefully there are others out there who feel like-minded.
